It’s a normal response to the microscopic muscle damage discussed earlier and isn’t necessarily a sign that something is wrong, though very severe soreness that limits movement for many days can be worth discussing with a healthcare provider.

DOMS typically fades within a few days as the muscle completes its repair process, and tends to lessen over time as the body adapts to a given type of exercise — a phenomenon sometimes called the “repeated bout effect.”

  • Eat enough protein spread across meals throughout the day, rather than concentrated in a single sitting.
  • Stay consistently hydrated, not just during workouts but throughout the day.
  • Consider electrolytes if you sweat heavily, since sodium and other electrolytes lost through sweat play a role in muscle function and hydration status.
  • Use active recovery days with light movement rather than complete rest, when soreness allows.
  • Manage stress, since chronically elevated stress hormones can interfere with the body’s recovery processes.
  • Don’t ignore pain that feels different from normal soreness — sharp, localized, or joint-related pain may indicate an injury rather than typical muscle fatigue.
